When your body attacks itself and you don’t know why? a personal story of a star ballerina beating hypothyroidism

Kathryn Morgan fights Back

At the age of 19, performing at one of the highest levels of ballet, a soloist with the New York City Ballet troupe, Kathryn Morgan found herself gaining weight, losing hair, feeling weak and exhausted.  She had no idea what was wrong.  In the competitive world of ballet, where perfection is the norm, Kathryn had to leave the dream she had worked so hard for and concentrate on getting healthy.  That’s when the situation worsened …she received the news she had a thyroid problem ― hypothyroidism was causing her symptoms.

Because this illness weakens the muscles, Kathryn was told to stop dancing. Imagine what happens to a star ballerina when she can no longer dance.

Kathryn has explained in interviews, Ballet was her life she had no identity outside the world of dance.  It took all her time, focus and energy to be a dancer at the NYC ballet level.  When the medication did not alleviate her symptoms, she tried doctor after doctor and still felt awful.  Finally, a doctor found the correct diagnosis; she required a combination of two medicines to regulate her thyroid.

Now she is losing and keeping the weight off, building her strength and determined to perform again.

Keep up with Kathryn as she rebuilds her ballet career Kathryn has connected with her fans to keep motivated.  She has embraced social media and gives tips on dance techniques, beauty, leotards, auditions and much more like online ballet lessons.  Best of all, she talks bravely of her struggles, challenges and what works for her.  We admire her grace and courage – can’t wait to see her back in a professional company.  Go Kathryn.
