RogersBase – Working to Make His Place in Gaming

Roger DiLuigi is a guy that knows how to have fun & has happily been able to make it his career.  So cool!!   An established personality in the gaming industry Roger has carved out his own space in the Pokemon, Super Smash Bros. podcast, Japan Time and the world of anime.

Best part, Roger gets to stay forever young with Pokemon plushies and days at work playing/battling opponents in real-time on line as fans watch, cheer and learn.

In order to succeed in this space, you need to be a disciplined self promoter as the competition is fierce.  Roger is a master at using internet tools and social media to build and engage his 86,000 growing fan base, but the work can be exhausting and exhilarating at the same time as Roger seeks out scoops on new games and keeps up with the status quo.  Doing all this plus keeping his fans entertained & engaged seems like more than a full time job to us. But we have to admit it all looks like so much fun.

To help Roger keep up his high octane energy we were excited to send him a new FIN14 Mattress when we heard he was kinda unhappy with his old one.  With everything Roger does in a day, he definitely needs great sleep.  Once his FIN14 arrived, Roger made a fun unboxing video and vlog all about FIN, his new apartment and introduces us to some of his his Plushie friends – Now we know Roger will have the best sleep to keep up with all his hyper-drive activities :)

SOME BACKGROUND

WHERE DID ROGER COME FROM & WHAT EDUCATION DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED IN GAMING?

He is originally from Chicago but currently resides in Los Angeles.  Roger is a Theater/English graduate from the University of Illinois at Chicago which seems to us to be a good fit for what he does, character, game analysis, writing, scripting, video production, song tunes, costumes, character and game strategy.  He also has done acting, voice overs, product demonstrations for Nintendo, and excels at social media.

SO WHAT DOES ROGER DO ALL DAY?

He is really busy producing several weekly shows, podcasts, plus vlogging, and keeping his fans updated with the latest news.  During all this, Roger gives proposals to game companies and meets with Maker Studios executives for future projects. He’s connected with game companies to get the latest scoops on release dates, new products and more to share with his audience.  And he is a full time social media writer for a major motion picture studio in Los Angeles.

ADVICE TO OTHERS Interested in Joining the Gaming Industry

Whether you’re aware of it or not, something caused you to wake up and say “I want to work on games”. The beautiful thing about this industry is that we are all here for a reason. Something triggered you to want to be here, whether it was the sheer wonder you felt when playing a video game for the first time or the desire to craft that wonder for others to experience. Find that fire inside of yourself, that inherent need to be here, and soon enough, after months, sometimes even years of working at it, something will click and you will find your place in the giant puzzle that is this business. And, when that day finally comes and you land your dream job, you’ll realize that those experiences were some of the most valuable moments of your working life.

Roger is famous for his role as host of the popular Super Smash Bros. podcast, Japan Time.  Japan Time provides in-depth analysis of the latest news on Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Roger is known for his Pokemon Wifi Battles on Twitch part of the new rise of competitive e-sports.  For those who don’t know, on Twitch, fans watch live streams of their favorite gamers.   He is very excitedly waiting for the release of Pokemon Go on mobile.  The new Pokemon Go will have features like catching wild Pokemon and battling other trainers on mobile devices.  We bet Roger will have the inside track on this one for his fans. Enjoy Watching Roger's excitement,
anticipation & classic reactions to the Pokemon press announcement below.

ONEPIECE

Roger also does weekly live reviews of One Piece, which is a Japanese manga series, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda.  We did not know what to expect when we watched along with Roger, (since we are not followers of One Piece).  Roger’s enthusiasm was so catchy, it’s really entertaining to watch the review live.  He provides a post-review video with analysis and guesses about future plots –  which is really cool!  You can see how it could become addictive and with Roger’s insights we felt like part of a in-the-know group.  It’s definitely more entertaining to see how others react and hear their thoughts live – as opposed to a regular review that is pre-recorded.
